Associate Investment Director

Roles and Responsibilities:
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation seeks an Associate Investment Director with some investment experience who is a self-starter with strong intellect, superior analytical ability, outstanding communication skills, and a passion for investing. She or he will be a key part of a small team of generalist investment professionals (CIO, two Investment Directors, and one Investment Coordinator) who interact daily to manage the Foundation’s endowment.

The Associate Investment Director (AID) will initially have primary responsibility for portfolio analytics used to monitor existing investments and evaluate future opportunities. The AID will participate in due diligence meetings, and identify and take on important research and analytical tasks. He or she will have the opportunity to learn or deepen various skills including an understanding of selected asset classes, fund manager monitoring and assessment, and endowment management more broadly. Depending on the individual’s job performance and growth, he or she will have the opportunity to play a lead role in the monitoring and evaluation of a number of existing portfolio funds. It is critical that the AID enjoy working closely within a small team with one common goal, where all members ‘pitch in’ without hesitation on any and all tasks that arise.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing rigorous due diligence on new and existing managers, which will include the creation of reports and processes to monitor manager exposures, holdings, news, and staffing;
  • Analyzing portfolio performance, exposures and other characteristics; clearly and concisely communicating key conclusions of analysis to the team;
  • Assisting with research on investment strategies and opportunities;
  • Assisting with the identification, selection, and monitoring of outside investment managers across various strategies, including marketable and non-marketable funds;
  • Assisting with administrative and operational tasks as needed; assisting with preparation of investment committee meeting materials;
  • Performing such other duties as may be assigned from time to time by senior investment staff;

Qualifications:
The candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree and 3+ years work experience in an investment management, investment banking, or other finance-related position. Excellent interpersonal skills, superb quantitative ability, and outstanding attention to detail are required. A passion for investing is essential. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who thrives on working closely within a small team. A CFA or MBA is desirable but not a requirement.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a philanthropic nonprofit founded in 1934, makes grants to support research and education in science, technology, economic performance, and the quality of American life. Staff employs external fund managers to invest the Foundation’s $1.7 billion endowment.

Compensation:
This is an exempt, two- to three-year position. After two years, it is possible that an Investment Director position may be offered to a top performer. Other individuals will continue their professional development by pursuing positions elsewhere. The Alfred P.
