Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Education for Underrepresented Groups

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation makes grants that expand educational opportunities in mathematics, science and engineering (MS&E) to groups underrepresented in those fields.  The program has three major components.

  • The Minority Ph.D. Program partners with select universities around the country to increase the number of underrepresented minority Ph.D.'s in MS&E by 100 per year.
  • The Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnership operates through five universities across the country to increase the number of American Indian students earning master's and doctorate degrees in MS&E.
  • The Sloan Postdoctoral Advancement Program works with the California Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley to help position minority Ph.D.'s for faculty positions at research universities.

Grants are also made to support especially promising projects with a national focus that promote the advancement of women or other underrepresented minorities in MS&E.
