Aging and Flexible Work The goal of the Aging and Flexible work grant area is to promote workplace flexibility for older workers through ongoing research project support and through the establishment of university-based research centers. According to AARP, 80 percent of current baby boomers anticipate working beyond the conventional retirement age of 65. Yet the majority of them indicate that they do not intend nor want to work full time nor full year. Based on this projection, we now recognize the importance of creating flexible workplaces for mature workers, as well as the significance of older workers as allies in shaping a more flexible workplace for all workers. In 2005, the Trustees approved the establishment of a new Center on Aging and Work/Flexible Work at Boston College. The Foundation, Georgetown University and Boston College participated in the December 2005 White House Conference on Aging (WHCoA). Alfred P. Sloan Foundation grantees have established themselves as the leading experts and resources on flexible work and aging.
