Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Important Note

Nominations for the Sloan Research Fellowships are processed online through Interfolio.com.  Candidates will use the new system to request letters of nomination and confidential letters of support from their senior colleagues, as well as to directly upload their CV, personal research statement, publication history, and scholarly articles.

Candidates may begin uploading nomination documents to Interfolio.com immediately and must submit completed nomination packets by September 15, 2012.

The Foundation strongly encourages candidates to begin the nomination process well in advance of the September 15 deadline.

All nomination materials for the Sloan Research Fellowships must be uploaded electronically through Interfolio.com and submitted no later than September 15, 2012.

Interfolio Instructions (detailed pdf here)

  • Go to the appropriate Interfolio page via one of the links below.
  • If you already have an Interfolio account, login to Interfolio.  If you don’t have an account, please create one.  (There is no charge to create an account.)
  • A complete nomination for a Sloan Research Fellowship involves three types of documents:
  1. Documents the candidate must supply his or herself.  (e.g. the CV/publication list, personal research statement, and two representative articles by the candidate.)
  2. Documents that must be supplied on behalf of the candidate by another party.  (e.g the three letters of support.)
  3. Documents that may be supplied either by the candidate or by a third party.  (e.g. the nomination letter)

Note:  Interfolio handles these three types of documents differently

  • For documents the candidate must supply his or herself (CV, research statement, two research papers), the candidate uploads them directly through Interfolio.  In addition, some basic information (name, educational history, etc.) must also be entered by the candidate.  You do not have to do this all at once.  Interfolio will save your work if you upload some, but not all, of the required documents or fill out some, but not all, of the required form fields.
  • For documents that must be supplied by another party (letters of support), the candidate provides the names and email addresses of the persons who will be supplying these documents.  The Interfolio system then emails these persons with a request for the documents and instructions for how to upload them.  The writers of letters of support will have to login or sign up for an Interfolio account to upload their documents.  (It’s free.)  Note:  To ensure confidentiality, candidates may not upload letters of support directly.  Letter writers must upload their letters themselves.  The Interfolio system will allow a candidate to check the status of requested letters of support, allowing him or her to see whether a letter has been submitted on his or her behalf.  (It won’t let a candidate read the letter, however.)
  • For documents that may be supplied either by the candidate or by a third party (nomination letter) the candidate must first indicate whether he will be uploading the nomination letter himself or whether he will be requesting that the letter be uploaded by a third party.

If he is requesting the letter himself, he uploads the document in a similar manner as his CV, research statement, and two scientific articles.  The candidate logs into Interfolio and uploads the document and selects “Nomination letter” from the document type dropdown menu to indicate that it is a nomination letter he is uploading.

If the candidate is instead requesting that his nominator upload the nomination letter him- or herself, the process proceeds in a similar manner to the process for requesting letters of support.  The candidate indicates whether he would like the nomination letter to be confidential or non-confidential (by requesting a “Confidential Letter of Support or Non-Confidential Letter of Support, respectively), enters the name and email address of the nominator, and the Interfolio system will email the nominator with the request and instructions for how to upload the nomination letter.

Once all documents have been uploaded, the candidate submits the completed package.  Please note that uploaded documents, including letters of nomination and letters of support, are not automatically submitted to the Sloan Foundation for consideration.   Candidates must initiate a submission process through Interfolio.  Completed applications must be submitted no later than September 15, 2012.  The Foundation strongly encourages candidates to begin well in advance of the September 15 deadline to allow letter writers and nominators sufficient time to compose and upload their letters.

Candidates are encouraged to deliver uploaded nomination materials twice: once when they have uploaded all their personal information (CV, personal research statement, two representative articles) and again (sans documents already delivered) when their letters of nomination and letters of support have been submitted on their behalf.  (Delivering documents once they've been uploaded is as easy as pushing a button.)  Early submissions, even those that are incomplete, help ease the administrative bottleneck caused by the large number of submissions that come in near the September 15 deadline.

Note to department administrators:  The Interfolio system is designed under the assumption that candidates for the Sloan Research Fellowships will be using the system themselves.  Administrators who are collecting documents and submitting nominations on behalf of a faculty member should set up Interfolio accounts as if they were the nominated candidate.
